MONTEREY SELECT BOARD
MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF AUGUST 8, 2005
The regular weekly meeting of the Monterey Select Board was opened at 8:30 a.m. with members Michèle Miller (Chair), Michael Storch, and Jonathan Sylbert all present.
In attendance for the meeting: Laurily Epstein of the Monterey News; Liz Goodman
1. The Board met with Building Commissioner Don Torrico to review building items, as follows:
a. Building Commissioner work schedule: Volume of work has been exceeding the 10 hours per week
b. Camp Inspections: Direct payment of camp inspection fees; letters to camps regarding compliance
c. Building Commissioner vacation: August 12-21
d. Violations: Brian Jeffries building site on Route 23; Operations Director Maynard Forbes advised that the culvert installed does not meet the 15-in. standard. There was discussion of adding a statement to the Town’s Driveway Permit that no Certificate of Occupancy will be issued until all specifications are met
e. Town Bylaws: Torrico does not have adequate time to work on bylaw amendments
f. Appointment of officer to oversee signs
2. The Board met with Director of Operations Maynard Forbes to review Highway Department items, as follows:
a. Fairview Road: Revised drainage plan from Guerton-Elkerton
b. Mowing: Miller suggested that all Town mowing (cemeteries, parks, Town Beach and dam, etc.) be consolidated; Forbes will prepare a cost summary
c. Town Beach: Highway Department is doing trash pickup temporarily
d. New Marlborough Road Bridge: Requires maintenance
e. Salt Shed & Transfer Station: Salt shed no longer required by EPA?
f. Dam inspection: Results will be available shortly
g. Upcoming projects
3. The Board met with Chief Gareth Backhaus to review Police Department items, as follows:
a. Weekly incident report
b. Dog restraint letter: Approved by Board with reformatting
c. Pedestrian walkway signs
d. Mount Hunger Road accident: Backhaus was instructed to contact Verizon with a request for safe operation of vehicles at Town worksites
4. Nora Hayes of New Marlboro Road presented herself to the Board as a candidate for the
position of Dog Officer

5. The Board scheduled a Second Homeowners Meeting for Saturday, August 27, 2005, at 10 a.m. at the Town Hall.
6. The Board reviewed and corrected a news article that appeared in the last issue of the Monterey News with reporter Laurily Epstein.
7. The Board voted unanimously to appoint Janet Cathcart as the Town’s Alternate on the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission for a one-year term ending June 30, 2006.
8. The Board met with Town Secretary Melissa Noe to review Town Office items.
9. The Board met with Town Accountant Barbara Gauthier to review budget items.
10. Highway and Treasury Warrants were signed.
11. The clerk was given instructions regarding correspondence.
12. The Minutes of August 1, 2005, were approved as written.
13. It was unanimously voted that the meeting be adjourned (12:10 p.m.).
